The Mailman Effect: How We Do Things

How We Aim To Be The Best Window Cleaning Service

In the home service industry, it's easy to get carried away by the temptation to offer a wide range of services - everyday I have new ideas of how I can offer more to my clients.

We’ve all seen those trucks driving through neighborhoods, plastered with a laundry list of services they provide. The problem? They don’t specialize in any one thing. This approach can leave potential clients wondering what these businesses truly excel at. Are they jack-of-all-trades or masters of none?

That’s why, in my window cleaning business, I’ve adopted a different mindset. I believe in the power of niching down—mastering one service so thoroughly that you become the go-to expert in your field. For me, that service is window cleaning.

In a market as competitive as Nashville, it’s easy to fall into the trap of trying to do everything to stand out. But I’ve found that focusing on delivering unparalleled window cleaning services has been far more effective. My goal is to provide such exceptional service that my clients wouldn’t dream of hiring anyone else.

However, that doesn’t mean I’m rigid. While it’s crucial to specialize, it's equally important to be flexible and responsive to your clients' needs. That is why we DO offer additional services such as pressure washing and sealcoating.

Take, for example, a recent experience I had with a homeowner whose driveway was in need of sealing. He had experienced contractors who had overpromised, overpriced, and underdelivered in the past, and he had his own experience in the home services industry. Simply - an honest client looking for an honest company to help him out. I saw this as an opportunity to SERVE a client - the whole point of a SERVICE business.

I took on the job, knowing that while I normally focus on window washing, I had the skills and the commitment to do it right. Did I make mistakes? Absolutely. But each misstep was a learning opportunity, and I never leave the jobsite until my client is completely satisfied. I am always willing to go the extra mile to make things right.

The result? The driveway turned out great! Not only did I gain even more valuable experience, even more skills, but I also built a relationship with a customer and made a friend.

This homeowner went above and beyond in referring me to his neighbors, promoting my business in his HOA Facebook group, on Nextdoor, and even spreading the word to people walking by his house.

He even stopped the mail delivery driver to let them know about me.

It was unbelievable to see how great of a person this client was, but also to see firsthand the effect that you can have on a customer when you dedicate yourself to working hard, learning from your mistakes, solving problems for people, and taking pride in your work.

I have learned that too many people are used to receiving mediocre services.

Doing things the right way, keeping your word, and focusing on building lasting relationships with your clients will always be fulfilling and rewarding.

This is what I call "The Mailman Effect"

As a business owner, I believe that your focus should be simple: provide such an outstanding service that your clients feel compelled to share their experience with everyone, even the mailman!

In the end, the true essence of a service business is not just about doing the job; it’s about genuinely serving your clients. When you simplify your approach to focus on providing the best service possible, the rewards will naturally follow. The goal is to create a lasting impact that turns every client into a lifelong advocate for your business.

This is the mindset I bring to every job, and it’s the standard I’ll continue to uphold as I grow my business. Master one thing, serve your clients with excellence, and let your reputation speak for itself.
