What is Deionized Water and Why It’s Great for Cleaning Windows
What is Deionized Water?
Deionized water is water that has had all of its ions removed. Ions are tiny particles that can make water "hard" or "soft." When water is deionized, it becomes super pure. Think of it like the cleanest, purest water you can imagine!
Why is Deionized Water Useful for Cleaning Windows?
Deionized water is great for cleaning windows because it doesn't leave any spots or streaks. Normal tap water has minerals and impurities that can leave marks on windows when it dries. DI water, however, is so pure that it dries completely clear, leaving your windows sparkling clean. It also allows for a washing process of all of the windows, frames, sills, and screens.
How We Use Deionized Water to Clean Windows
At Panoramic Window Cleaning, we use a special deionization system. Here's how it works:
Deionization Tank: We start with a deionization tank that purifies the water by removing all the ions. This turns regular tap water, or hard water from your water spigot, into pure deionized water. After it runs through a carbon sediment filter to remove all of the larger particles in the water, it is filtered through the deionization tank with live resin to full purify the water. After testing the water to make sure the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) is under 10 parts per million (a fancy way of saying we know the water will dry clear), we run the water into our water fed pole.
Water Fed Extendable Pole: Next, we feed the DI water through an extendable water-fed pole. This pole can reach high windows up to four stories high without the need for ladders. This keeps us safe while we are cleaning also.
Brush Attachment: At the end of the pole, there is a nylon brush where low-pressure water sprays from. This brush is perfect for scrubbing windows and all the surrounding areas, like the window frames and sills. The deionized water is transferred from the tank, up through the pole, and comes out of the brush head allowing us to scrub with a constant supply of pure water - ensuring we are able to scrub off even the toughest buildup and leave it to dry spotless.
The Cleaning Process
We use the water-fed pole with the nylon brush attachment to scrub the windows and surrounding areas. The DI water washes away all the dirt and grime, and because it’s so pure, it leaves no spots or streaks behind. The best part is that it dries 100% clear, giving your windows with a spotless, shiny finish.
Why DI Water Can Be Better than Squeegees For Exterior Cleaning
Using DI water can be a better option than using squeegees for a few reasons:
No Streaks or Spots: DI water dries clear without leaving any streaks or spots, which can sometimes happen with squeegees.
Safe and Efficient: The extendable pole means we can clean high windows safely from the ground, avoiding the risks of using ladders.
Thorough Cleaning: The nylon brush allows us to scrub down not just the glass, but also the frames and sills, giving a more thorough clean. It rains roughly 120 days per year in the Nashville area which means 120 days that rain can pull the dirt and dust buildup from your frames and siding onto your glass. Cleaning the frames and sills first ensures that rain will slide right off of the glass without leaving behind spots.
